Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapist

Dr. Damon Bescia is an Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapist who has graduated from a Fellowship Program in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy, being recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT). The term "orthopedic" refers to the treatment of the neuromusculoskeletal system: the spine, nerves, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, cartilage, and related structures that provide the body with sensation, support, or movement. "Manual" physical therapy, commonly known as "hands-on" physical therapy, is the implementation of a physical therapist's skilled hands to perform advanced techniques in order to decrease pain and improve mobility or motion. These passive movements to joints and soft tissue may be applied at varying speeds and amplitudes and fall into various broad categories such as Soft Tissue Mobilization, Massage, Joint Mobilization, Thrust Manipulation, Spinal Manipulation, Neuromobilization, Manual Stretching, Muscle Energy Technique, Mobilization with Movement, and Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. Any proposed techniques will be evidence-based, tailored to fit your individual needs and goals, and performed only with your informed consent.
Board Certified in Orthopedic Physical Therapy
&
Board Certified in Sports Physical Therapy
Dr. Damon Bescia is a board certified in orthopedic physical therapy and sports physical therapy. Board Certifications are awarded to physical therapists for their expertise in a particular area. These physical therapist specialists are recognized for ensuring clinical excellence, demonstrating expert clinical reasoning, and commanding a current knowledge of research. As of 2016, the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) had only certified approximately 10,500 physical therapists in orthopedic physical therapy and approximately 1600 in sports physical therapy; those who have earned both board certifications number only 351. To put the numbers in perspective, there are approximately 200,000 physical therapists in the United States.
Do these certifications really mean anything? Yes, there is evidence to support the superiority of knowledge that board certified physical therapists have compared to physical therapists not board certified. A study by Childs et al in 2005 found that physical therapists board certified in either orthopedic physical therapy or sports physical therapy demonstrated higher levels of knowledge in managing musculoskeletal conditions than medical students, residents, and interns; family practice physicians; general surgeons; all physicians and physician specialists except for orthopedists; and all physical therapists who were not board certified. You can find a board certified expert in the field of your choice, whether orthopedics, sports, or otherwise at the ABPTS website or the Move Forward website. Look for the ABPTS icon identifying a board certified specialist.
Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (AAOMPT)
A Fellowship Program is the highest level of education available to practicing physical therapists. Entry-level physical therapy education usually includes one course in orthopedic physical therapy spread across two semesters. In comparison, the Fellowship Program typically requires 2 to 3 years for completion - and all of it is focused exclusively on Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy.

Evidence in Motion describes the benefits: "The Fellowship program enables the participant to become a clinician scientist skilled in the evidence-based integration of advanced manual therapy techniques and to become a leader in clinical practice and research." As of 2016 there have benn only 1,100 graduates from all Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy Fellowship Programs combined. A study by Rodeghero et al in 2015 set out to compare the performance of Fellowship trained physical therapists with that of physical therapists who were not fellowship trained. Three aspects of patient care were considered: changes in patient function, efficiency of care, and patient outcomes. It observed that the Fellowship trained physical therapists proved superior in all three categories. Therefore, if you want superior results in less time, chose a Fellowship trained physical therapist.
By way of this Fellowship Program in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy, Dr. Damon Bescia has received extensive education in the best available research, expert clinical reasoning, and advanced hands-on techniques. As a testament to the quality of his practice, Dr. Damon Bescia has been recognized as a leader in patient care by achieving superior patient outcomes and a high national ranking by the leader in independent outcomes measurement, FOTO (Focus On Therapeutic Outcomes).
Strength & Conditioning Specialist
The Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credentials are awarded by the National Strength and Conditioning Association to professionals who apply scientific knowledge to train athletes for the primary goal of enhancing athletic performance. They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs, and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention. Commonly known as "Strength Coaches", these professionals are often employed to train athletes of professional and collegiate teams, and they offer their expertise to the public by authoring articles both online and in strength training and fitness magazines.
Certified Personal Trainer
The Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) credentials are awarded by the National Strength and Conditioning Association to health and fitness professionals who, using an individualized approach, assess, motivate, educate, and train clients regarding their personal health and fitness needs. A Certified Personal Trainer will design safe and effective exercise programs, provide the guidance to help clients achieve their personal health and fitness goals, and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Dr. Damon Bescia maintains his credentials as a Certified Personal Trainer.
